If you are in the Lake George area and are looking for a great hiking day trip, take a look at Tongue Mountain. Tongue Mountain basically offers 2 main trails for hiking.

The first trail is an easy to medium difficulty trail that winds next to the lake. While there are limited views of the lake for the first couple of miles, there are great views of the lake once you proceed. The views, however, are at the lake level. There are a couple of point where you can swim (or if you have dogs, let the dogs have a swim and a drink). If you want breathtaking views, however, you should try the mountain line.

The mountain trail is a medium to difficult trail. The first couple of miles are mostly at a 20% incline with very few area that level out. The second leg of the climb, increase the incline from arounf 20% to 45% in some areas. Again, the incline hardly ever levels out, so you need to be prepared with plenty of water and good hiking boots or shoes. The trail offers very little in the way of views until you reach the top. So, commit to reach the top, or don't bother.

Tongue moutain is not a main attaction for the area. However, is is a quick trip to a great view (as long as you are willing to work for it). Because there are a lot of other "bigger and badder" mountains in the area, the trails are usually empty.

WARNING: Rattlesnakes are prevalant in the area due to the elevation, the area, and the lack of people. So be prepared and watch your step.

A parking lot is available that allows for about 10 cars.
